Named for a market center in Greece, Emporia was founded in 1857, transforming what was once prairie land into a vibrant community. This heritage was recently celebrated when the National Trust for Historic Preservation named Emporia a winner of its Great American Main Street Award in 2005.
Emporia is known as the "Front Porch to the Flint Hills." The five million acres of grassland called the Flint Hills comprise the largest unbroken tract of tallgrass prairie left in North America. Covered with native bluestem grasses and colorful wildflowers, the Flint Hills region is considered by many to offer the world's best grazing land.
Emporia is home of Emporia State University and Flint Hills Technical College. The National Teachers Hall of Fame is also located in Emporia, and the moving Induction ceremony is held each June.
